What we ship

The Work

Hiring Takes 48 Days. Your Roadmap Can’t Wait That Long.

The median time to fill a technology role in the US is 48 days (SHRM 2025). For senior engineers, it’s 58-75 days. And that’s if the hire works out. The US Department of Labor puts the cost of a bad hire at 30% of first-year earnings. SHRM puts the full replacement cost at 50-200% of annual salary.

Staff augmentation exists because the math on full-time hiring doesn’t work for every situation. Sometimes you need a senior Laravel developer in two weeks, not two months. Sometimes your roadmap slipped because a key engineer left, and you can’t wait 60 days to refill the seat. Sometimes you have 18 months of funded work and a board that won’t approve 5 new headcount.

EltexSoft is a boutique engineering studio. 35-50 senior engineers. We’ve placed engineers in client teams for 11 years. Our average engagement is 3+ years. That number matters more than anything else on this page. It means engineers stay, clients keep them, and the model works.

What Staff Augmentation Actually Is

Staff augmentation means you hire engineers from an external company, but they work inside your team. Not alongside your team. Inside it.

They use your Slack. They attend your standups. They follow your sprint cadence. They submit pull requests to your repos, and your tech lead reviews them. The vendor handles the employment: payroll, benefits, equipment, retention. You manage the work.

This is different from outsourcing. In outsourcing, you hand a project to an external team with their own PM and their own process. You get deliverables. In augmentation, you get people. You keep control of the work, the architecture, and the priorities.

The distinction matters because 52% of software projects experience scope creep (PMI), and McKinsey’s study of 5,400 IT projects found the average runs 45% over budget. When scope changes (and it always changes), augmented engineers adapt because they’re inside your team. Outsourced teams adapt through change orders.

When You Should Use It

Your open req has been live for 6+ weeks. Every week an engineering seat stays empty costs roughly $500/day in delayed delivery (Deloitte). For a senior engineer producing 3-5x their salary in business value, the real cost is $1,500-$2,500/day. Staff augmentation closes the gap in 14-21 days.

You need specific skills your team lacks. A Django specialist for a 6-month migration. A React Native engineer for a mobile launch. A DevOps engineer to set up CI/CD. You don’t need to hire full-time for a capability that’s only needed for one phase.

Your outsourcing engagement is bleeding change orders. Fixed-bid contracts create adversarial incentives. PMI reports 31% of fixed-price contracts generate unexpected extra costs. Staff augmentation on time-and-materials aligns incentives. You both want the team to be productive.

You have a funded runway and need to move fast. Series A through Series C startups with 12-24 months of funded work need engineers now, not after a 3-month hiring process. Augmented engineers start contributing in week one.

The Numbers Nobody Publishes

72% of employers globally report difficulty filling roles (ManpowerGroup 2026 Talent Shortage Survey, 39,063 employers across 41 countries). The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report found 63% of employers identify skill gaps as the biggest barrier to business transformation through 2030. Korn Ferry projects 85.2 million unfilled tech jobs by 2030, costing $8.5 trillion in unrealized revenue.

The staff augmentation market reflects this pressure: $291.71 billion in 2025, growing at 9% annually (Global Growth Insights).

But here’s the number vendors don’t talk about. 59% of IT staff augmentation contracts encounter difficulties from mismatched skills or inadequate experience, and 48% of businesses report high attrition within augmented teams (Global Growth Insights 2026). Nearly half of all augmentation engagements are undermined by the same vendor that sold them.

The difference between augmentation that works and augmentation that doesn’t is specific and measurable.

How We Prevent the 59% Failure Rate

Against skill mismatch (59% of contracts): You interview every engineer we propose. Live coding assessments, system design reviews, and screening notes are shared before the interview. Right of refusal on every candidate. We don’t do blind shortlists because the engineer you interview is the engineer you get.

Against high attrition (48% of businesses): Our average client engagement is 3+ years. Our engineers stay because they work on one client at a time, they’re treated as team members (not second-class contractors), and they’re paid competitively. When we say dedicated, we mean single-client focus, not split across three projects.

Against communication breakdown: Lisbon (UTC+0/+1) overlaps fully with Western Europe. Ukraine (UTC+2/+3) gives 3-4 hours of overlap with US East Coast. Every engineer speaks professional English. More importantly, our engineers push back on architectural decisions when they disagree. You’re not getting “yes culture.” You’re getting senior engineers who’ve shipped production software and have opinions about how to do it well.

Against hidden costs: $50-99/hr, all-in. No onboarding fees. No equipment markups. No platform subscriptions. No surprise invoices. If you want to convert an engineer to full-time, the buyout is 0-15% of annual salary, not $50K.

How It Works

Days 1-2: Discovery call. We learn your tech stack, team structure, sprint cadence, timezone requirements, and what “senior” means to you (because it means different things at different companies).

Days 3-7: We shortlist 2-5 candidates from our bench. Each comes with a screening report covering live coding results, system design notes, and our assessment of fit. No generic resumes.

Days 7-14: You interview each candidate. Video call, pair programming, whatever your process is. You decide who joins.

Days 14-21: Contract signed, NDA in place, IP assignment executed. Engineer gets environment access, Slack invite, and standup invite. We assign a buddy from your team for the first two weeks.

Week 1: First pull request submitted. The engineer is writing code in your codebase, not reading documentation.

Week 2-3: Independent ticket completion. The ramp-up is over when your tech lead stops reviewing every PR.

Month 2+: Full velocity. At this point, the augmented engineer is functionally indistinguishable from your in-house team. Our longest augmentation engagement is multi-year. Same engineer, same client.

What It Costs

We publish our rates because serious buyers deserve real numbers.

Senior engineer (5-15 years experience): $50-99/hr depending on stack and seniority. That’s $8,000-$16,000/month for a full-time dedicated developer.

For comparison:

A US full-time senior hire costs $230K-$280K annually all-in (salary + 25-50% benefits/equity/taxes + recruiting + equipment). Takes 48-75 days to place and 3-6 months to reach full productivity.

A US-onshore staffing agency charges $130-$180/hr, which is 2-3x our rate for comparable seniority.

Toptal charges $100-$200+/hr plus a $500 deposit and a $79/month platform fee. Andela charges $60-$100/hr with a $50K direct-hire fee and a 12-month auto-renew.

Our $50-99/hr rate is 35-47% below US senior medians at the same seniority level. No platform fees. No deposits. No auto-renew. 30-day termination notice.

What We Cover

Backend: Laravel, PHP, Python, Django, Flask, Java, Node.js

Frontend: React, Vue, Next.js, TypeScript

Mobile: Swift (iOS), Kotlin (Android), React Native

DevOps: AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD, Playwright

AI/ML: LangChain, LangGraph, RAG pipelines, LLM integration, Python ML stack

Every engineer on our bench has 5-15 years of production experience. We don’t have juniors because our bench is 35-50 people. At that size, every engineer needs to scope a system, not just close tickets.

Who We Are

EltexSoft is a boutique software engineering studio. Headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal. Engineering team in Ukraine. 35-50 senior engineers. Founded in 2015.

We work with Fortune 500 enterprises and funded startups across FinTech, LegalTech, EdTech, FoodTech, and AI. 5.0 Clutch rating across 30+ verified reviews. 200+ five-star Upwork reviews. Top Rated Plus and Expert-Vetted agency status (top 1%). Average client engagement: 3+ years.

Staff augmentation is one of three engagement models we offer. The others are dedicated teams (a self-contained pod with a tech lead) and outsourced delivery (we own the project end-to-end). Most clients start with augmentation and evolve into dedicated teams as the engagement matures.

Lisbon HQ means EU jurisdiction, GDPR-native operations, and a timezone that works for Europe and the US East Coast.

Ukraine engineering gives access to one of Europe’s deepest talent pools: 300,000+ software developers, 23,000+ tech graduates annually, and an IT sector that exported over $6 billion in 2024. Our team has maintained uninterrupted delivery through distributed infrastructure.

FAQ

Common questions

What is IT staff augmentation?
Staff augmentation means you hire engineers from an external company, but they work inside your team. Your Slack, your standups, your sprint cadence. They report to your tech lead. The vendor handles payroll, benefits, retention, and replacement. You manage the work and priorities.
How is staff augmentation different from outsourcing?
In outsourcing, you hand a project to an external team that manages itself. You get deliverables. In staff augmentation, you get people who join your existing team. You keep control of the work, the process, and the architecture. Staff augmentation gives you more control and institutional knowledge. Outsourcing gives you less management overhead.
How fast can you place an engineer?
14-21 days from discovery call to first standup. We shortlist 2-5 vetted candidates within 5 business days. You interview each one. After you select, we handle contracts and onboarding setup. The engineer joins your team with environment access and a buddy from your side.
What does staff augmentation cost?
EltexSoft's rates are $50-99 per hour for senior engineers. A dedicated senior developer costs roughly $8,000-$16,000 per month. Compare that to a US full-time hire at $230K-$280K annually all-in, or a US-onshore agency at $130-$180 per hour. Our rates are 35-47% below US senior medians at equivalent seniority.
Are engineers dedicated to my project?
Yes. Every augmented engineer works on your project exclusively. No splitting across clients. No context-switching between codebases. This is the single biggest difference between staff augmentation and body shopping.
What happens if a developer underperforms?
We replace them within 10 business days. It's a written clause in the contract, not a verbal promise. In 11 years, we've had to use it rarely. Our average engagement is 3+ years, which means engineers stay and clients keep them.
Who manages the augmented engineer?
You do. Your tech lead assigns tasks, reviews code, runs sprint planning. The engineer is functionally part of your team. We handle the employment relationship: payroll, benefits, equipment, and retention.
What time-zone overlap do you offer?
Lisbon (UTC+0/+1) overlaps fully with Western Europe. Ukraine (UTC+2/+3) overlaps with all of Europe and 3-4 hours with US East Coast. For US clients, this means morning standups and planning sessions, then deep work through the afternoon with deliverables ready by next morning.
Can I interview the engineers before they start?
Yes. You interview every candidate we shortlist. Right of refusal on everyone. We send 2-5 vetted profiles with screening notes, live coding results, and system design assessments. You pick who joins your team.
What's the minimum engagement length?
30 days. We recommend 3+ months because the first 2-3 weeks are ramp-up. You get the best ROI when engineers stay long enough to deeply learn your codebase and domain. Most of our clients stay for years.
Who owns the code and IP?
You do. Full work-for-hire assignment from day one. All code, documentation, and artifacts belong to you. This is standard in our contracts.
Can I convert an augmented engineer to full-time later?
Yes. We charge a reasonable conversion fee based on tenure, typically 0-15% of annual salary depending on how long the engineer has been on your project. No $50K buyout clauses, no mandatory replacement purchases.
What tech stacks do you cover?
Laravel, React, Vue, Python, Django, Flask, Swift, Kotlin, Java, PHP, WordPress, Node.js, Next.js, AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Playwright, and more. Our engineers also work with AI/ML stacks including LangChain, RAG pipelines, and LLM integration.
